Foundations in Art

This course will provide a sequential study of artistic elements and technique, with emphasis on each student’s creative identity and critical thinking. Students will be introduced to drawing, painting, and mixed media. The fundamentals of studio art will be the baseline for this class. Students will be encouraged to explore media, think critically, talk and write about art. Throughout this class students will build a strong foundation of skills, as well as the beginning of a portfolio, through hands-on practice and projects. Students will study line, shape and form, focusing on light, tonal drawing and linear and atmospheric perspective in color and black and white. Students will gain historical and cultural knowledge throughout the course through presentations and visits to local museums. Students will learn the process of critique to evaluate their own and others’ works. Through this course students will explore how studying and creating art can lead to a more in-depth understanding of the world around them.
