Introduction to the History and Language of Russia/Ukraine II

Prerequisite: Introduction to the History and Language of Russia/Ukraine I
May fulfill either History or World Language elective (HIS, LANG)
Students continue learning the Russian language and building their vocabulary, while engaging in the study of Russian and Ukrainian history and culture begun in the first semester. We build on our ability to read, write, and speak Russian and continue to learn more complex grammar, including verb forms and impersonal constructions.We study in more detail how the Russian and Ukrainian languages differ and what is their common core. We will focus mainly on current events and on events from the twentieth-century, especially the Russian Revolutions and the Soviet Regime, World War II on the Eastern Front, and the Cold War. Students do a research paper on a topic of their choice from the twentieth or twenty-first century.
