Mixed Media Students Design for HerStory Apparel
Academy at Penguin Hall art students had an exciting opportunity for a real-world design experience. Each Mixed Media student learned about design, printmaking as well researching women in history. To take this learning experience beyond the classroom each student created a proposal and a design for HerStory Apparel which was presented to the company.
HerStory apparel’s mission is in line with APH goals to educate, empower and enlighten young women while HerStory is to honor, inspire, ignite. The companies art designs hope to honor the trailblazing women of the past, inspire the amazing women of today and ignite a future generation of girls. The company hopes to provide women and girls with empowering and inspiring apparel while honoring the incredible contributions of remarkable women largely ignored in history books. A portion of the proceeds from the company are donated to organizations that empower women and girls.
With all of that in mind, each student researched famous women in history, then wrote a two-page research paper summarizing her successes, quotes, and what her mark was on history to inspire their art design.
While most high school students just learn the basics of printmaking or design our students got to see the real world application. Students worked with the company and each student created one to two successful designs which a few lucky students will actually be featured on the HerStory website. As a thank you for our talented students’ hard work, HerStory chose one t-shirt to give to each student, which was the perfect way to end an exciting project.
