Symposium: How is an Exemplary Life Defined?

The inaugural APH Intersession Symposium will take place on Tuesday through Friday, January 22nd-25th. This kind of event is critical to students’ professional and personal growth. Making intentional time for learning beyond the classroom and to help students envision their future is in keeping with The Academy’s mission: to educate, enlighten and empower young women to live and to lead exemplary lives. This type of event fosters deep connections within The APH community and makes The Academy a special place. The event was also designed for students to gain exposure to the kind of college-level academic, professional, and personal development they will experience in college.

Tuesday: Global Engagement and Intellectual Curiosity
We will start the day with an interactive session, Life Outside of the Bubble: Engaging on a Global Level, led by Jarrett Carpenter. Jarrett is an alumnus of St. John’s Prep who went on to complete multiple years of service in the Peace Corps and who is now the Executive Director of an international non-profit and the founder of Emperador Clothing, a social enterprise that partners with tonle, a woman-owned zero-waste company to produce all garments for his line.

That morning and afternoon, faculty and staff will be teaching Master Classes on a variety of topics that are meaningful to them.

Wednesday: Defining an Exemplary Life
The day starts with a panel event featuring speakers who have had fascinating career paths and will talk about what this idea means to them. That afternoon will be an Academic Showcase, where students will be sharing their work from the first semester. You are all invited to attend! Please contact Heather Tripp, Director of Admissions, if you would like to join us for the Academic Showcase.

Thursday: Career Exploration
Each class year will be heading off on different field trips. Seniors will be going to Tufts Graduate School of Arts & Sciences, Juniors will be traveling to Wellesley or St. Anselm College, and first year and sophomores will be taking Career Treks to different companies and organizations in the area. The afternoon will feature workshops on creating a resume and developing a professional social media presence.

Friday: The Game of Life
Students and faculty will be traveling to different stops in the APH Game of Life to learn about topics including financial planning, community service/engagement, fitness/wellness, and many more. In the afternoon, we will be reflecting on our experiences during Symposium Week and celebrating the kickoff of second semester. We are delighted to have members of our incoming Class of 2023 join us.
